A very warm welcome to St Mary's College. Established on our present site in 1850 by Bishop Viard, we are a Catholic school for girls and the oldest girls' school in Wellington. In 1861, the Sisters of Mercy were invited to take over the running of the school. The strength and fortitude of these remarkable women is a legacy that the school proudly upholds as a role-model for our young women today.
As a Catholic college, our school culture is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. We follow these values throught the lens of Mercy, placing emphasis on the spirit and values of Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy: respect for ourselves, for each other and for our earth; of reaching out to others in a spirit of aroha and service; of connecting with others and recognising that we must take care of those who are especially vulnerable in our world.
Catherine McAuley called her Sisters to strive in pursuit of excellence. We follow that same call today. St Mary's has a culture of striving for excellence - academically, physically, and spiritually. We aim to provide an education which will enable each student to have a life-long love of learning and the desire and skills to make a difference in society. We wish for our College to be a place for our students where they can know themselves as individuals and where every student will be challenged to explore the opportunities that will help her become the best person she can be.
At St Mary's College we value our community. Parents and wider family are always welcome.
Together we work to make a living truth of our school mission statement:
Centred in God; Learning Together; Embracing the future; Enabling young women.
