During Term 1 we provided the school with $10,000 to be used for the purchase of Chromebooks. This ensured there were devices available for students across the school as the Year 9’s began BYOD. We also purchased a BBQ that will be used for school community events, such as the beginning of year Powhiri, and for the students to use for fundraising during the year. We were pleased to see it used for the recent sausage sizzle for Daffodil Day.
In March we held a Quiz Night at the Shepherds Arms. It was a great night, with a bit of banter and lots of spot prizes. In conjunction with a small auction on the evening, the night raised $2300. This money has been allocated, along with some other funds raised this year, to purchase 100 beanbags for use in shared spaces around the school. We have finally had them delivered and it has been particularly satisfying to have them available for the students to use!
The highlight of Term 2 was the Parent Daughter Breakfast at Parliament. It is such a special St Mary’s tradition where we celebrate and acknowledge our wonderful school community. SMSAO and Schola performed for us and we had our very own SMOG, Fran Wilde as our MC. The Banquet Room of Parliament was almost full and were fortunate to have Stacey Shortall as the guest speaker. Her personal story and initiative, “Who did you help today?” was an appropriate topic for the year of Mercy and we have had fantastic feedback from families. She was inspiring.
In Term 3 PTFA decided to branch out and try something new…we held an Auction on 18th August. Despite a shaky start selling tickets, the school community came together to support the evening and it was a HUGE success. By designing the night as a mixture of entertainment and auction people were able to come just to enjoy the music girls performing and our speaker and MC Stephen and Gerard Vaughan. A final figure of $9146.49 was raised and we now have the pleasure of identifying the best use of the funds around the school. Although some will be used for IT equipment, we are also hoping to improve the outdoor seating for the summer months.
As Term 4 approaches we are putting the final touches on our ‘Hills Angels’ support network. We will be asking for families to let us know if they are keen to be part of the pool of ‘Angels’, supporting families in our school community in times of great need with meals. We are sure that many of you will want to be involved.
