The St Mary’s College Music Department provides a wide range of academic and extra curricular opportunities in music.

All Year 9 students will have music as one of their option rotations.  This course introduces students to music composition, performance, working with others and the elements of music, including notation.

Students who select Music as an option from Year 10 onward work on developing confidence performing on their solo instrument, work with others in group performance settings, develop skills in composition, including digital music and the use of notation software, and further their knowledge of notation and the conventions of music.  In the senior school students are given the opportunity to specialise in areas such as performance, musical knowledge, music technology or composition.

From Year 9 students are able to take advantage of the instrumental lessons on offer at the school with specialist tutors.  The benefits of instrumental and music tuition are well supported by research, and support the key competencies in the NZ Curriculum.

Lessons available include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, french horn, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, guitar, bass guitar, drums, or vocal tuition.

Priority is given to Year 9 students and option music students.  Private individual lessons can also be arranged with the instrumental tutors.

Extra curricular activities include choirs, chamber orchestra and groups, a guitar ensemble, a student led ukulele club and bands.
